"His Love of Neighbor Encourages Us," Gibbs
Solemn requiem high mass was held at St. Joseph's Catholic church Tuesday morning for Marine Sgt. Marcus RYAN, who died on June 8 on Okinawa of wounds received in action.
The Very Rev. P. J. BEHAN, pastor of the church, was celebrant and Fr. A. D. GIBBS of Greene preached the sermon. Fr. R. P. MURPHY, pastor of Holy Family church, assisted as deacon and Fr. Joseph M. CAMPBELL as subdeacon. Fr. Alvan p. HEURING was master of ceremonies and Fr. Vern F. CROSS of Hampton was in sanctuary.
"An occasion of this kind fills us with courage and strength," said Fr. GIBBS, "to know that we still have young people in our country who are filled with the love of God and love of neighbor. Every cross stands as a marker over a grave as a symbol of love of some American boy or girl for love of the country in which he was born. This charity of Christ presses us on that we may do something in our own small way in our turn to give them strength and character to carry on the good fight."
Out of town relatives in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Lou FERNETTE, Prairie du Chein, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Elnora MOORHEAD and Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur HERSHEY, and Mr. and Mrs. Leo RYAN, Chicago, and Mr. and Mrs. James RYAN, Van Port, Ore. One brother, Pvt. John RYAN, stationed in Czechoslovakia, was the only one of the brothers and sisters not in attendance.
The Meyer funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
