Dennis P. RYAN, Jr., son of D. P. RYAN, 523 First street southwest, left to report for duty at Des Moines. His brother, Marcus, has been in the marines since January and is stationed on the island of Oahu in the Hawaiian territory.

in AIRPLANE CRASH in SOUTHFather Gets Telephone Call Here
That Son Died at BirminghamD. P. RYAN, 523 1st S. W., received a long distance call from headquarters at Birmingham, Ala., saying that his son, Sgt. Dennis "Dick" P. RYAN, was killed in an airplane crash there Tuesday. The message said that they body was being shipped to Mason City and that Mr. RYAN would be notified as to the time of its arrival as soon as it was possible to do so. No details of the crash were given.
Sgt. RYAN was stationed at Will Rogers field, Oklahoma City, Okla., but was sent to different centers to teach radio to personnel on bomber planes. His last assignment had been to Birmingham.
A letter was received from him here a few days ago, written from Will Rogers field, in which he stated that his pilot was ill and they weren't doing much flying. He said that consequently things were rather dull at the field.
Sgt. RYAN was a radio gunner with the army air force and flew in a B-17. He was here in November on a 15-day furlough. He has 2 brothers in the service, Sgt. John L. RYAN, Fort Lewis, Wash., and Cpl. Marcus RYAN with the marine corps in Honolulu.
Besides these 2 brothers and the father, there are 5 sisters and 2 other brothers surviving. They are Mrs. Herbert BENDER, 502 2nd S. W.; Mrs. Louis FERNETT, Prairie du Chein, Wis.; Mrs. L. J. McCAULEY, 1105 Harrison N. W.; Mrs. Eleanor MOOREHEAD, Chicago; Mrs. Wilbur HERSHEY, Oklahoma City, Okla.; James RYAN, Vancouver, Wash.; and Leo RYAN, Chicago. The mother died in 1925.
The body will be brought to the Meyer funeral home here.

As yet no word has been received by D. P. RYAN, 532 1st S. W., as to the time the body of his son, Sgt. Dennis P. RYAN killed in an airplane crash at Birmingham, Ala. Tuesday, will arrive in Mason City.
According to an Associated press wire received here, 9 other men were killed and a 10th seriously injured in the B-24 Liberators bomber crash which took the life of Sgt. RYAN Tuesday, as disclosed by Col. B. S. THOMPSON, commanding officer at Will Rogers field, Oklahoma city, Okla., home base of the bomber.
The body of Sgt. RYAN will be brought to the Meyer funeral home here.

Relatives Awaiting Arrival of Body
Funeral arrangements for Sgt. Dennis P. RYAN, son of D. P. RYAN, 532 1st S. W., killed in a plane crash at Birmingham, Ala., Tuesday, have not yet been made pending arrival of the body here.
According to relatives here, Sgt. RYAN, whose home base was Will Rogers field, Oklahoma City, Okla., had already landed in Birmingham and was taking off again when the accident occurred, as they had just received a folder he had mailed to them from Birmingham.
A brother-in-law of Sgt. RYAN, who lives at Oklahoma City, had gone out to the Will Rogers field there with some army papers left with him by Sgt. RYAN. He was told that one of the lieutenants on Dennis' plane was also killed in the crash had made 50 missions overseas without receiving a scratch.
It is expected that all of the brothers and sisters of Sgt. RYAN will be in attendance at the funeral except perhaps Cpl. Marcus RYAN, stationed in Honolulu, who, however, has been notified.

Military Honors Are Given Crash Victim
Funeral services for Sgt. Dennis P. RYAN, 22, who was killed in an airplane crash at Birmingham, Ala., Tuesday, Jan. 18, were held at St. Joseph's Catholic church Wednesday, with Father P. J. BEHAN officiating.
Full military rites were held at the graveside at St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery.
Pallbearers were Raymond DONNELLY, Lloyd KELROY, Patrick CURTAIN, Kenneth HOLMLUND, Marcell BALEK and Thomas CLAUSEN.
Attending the services from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. Louis FERNETTE, Prairie du Chein, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur HERSHEY, Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs. Elnora MOORHEAD and Pat RYAN, Chicago, and James RYAN and daughter, Marlene, Portland, Ore.
Tech. Sgt. John RYAN, Ft. Lewis, Wash., Pvt. 1/c and Mrs. Raymond BENISH, Kansas city, Kans., Norene SULLIVAN, Chicago, Mr. and Mrs. Leo COTA and Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester COTA, Des Moines, Mrs. Fred BAHUSEN, Rockwell, Father Vern CROSS, Mr. and Mrs. Will CROSS, and son, Tech. Sgt. Bill CROSS, Hampton.
Cpl. Marcus RYAN, Hawaii, was unable to attend. Sgt. Franklin L. PERSIDES, Oklahoma City, escorted the body to Mason City from Alabama and attended the services here.
The Meyer funeral home was in charge.

Sgt. John RYAN, son of D. P. RYAN, 532 1st N. W., left Tuesday for Camp Adair, Ore., following a 10-day emergency furlough here to attend the funeral of his brother, Sgt. Dennis P. RYAN, killed in a plane crash at Birmingham, Ala. John entered the service in Sept., 1942, and had been stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., before his recent transfer to Camp Adair.
