George M. Buck 81, Dies Here

Railroadman Lived Here for 57 Years

Funeral services for George Murton BUCK, 81, 307 7th street southeast, resident of Mason City for 57 years, will be held at 2:30 Friday afternoon at the Major memorial chapel with the Rev. Marvin B. KOBER of the 1st Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood cemetery with Masonic rites at the grave.

Mr. BUCK, son of Thomas and Eliza BUCK, was born April 18, 1862, in Ontario, Canada, and his early years were spent farming with his parents there. He was married on March 30, 1886, to Miss Emily MOTTERSHEAD at Palmerston, Ontario. Mr. and Mrs. BUCK arrived in Mason City April 1, 1886 and have made this their home since.

Mr. BUCK started work with the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad as a wiper in the roundhouse for 1 year and was then sent as fireman of the Iowa and Dakota division. He served in that capacity until 1897 when he was promoted to engineer and took charge of a switch engine in the yards at Mason City where he remained until his retirement in March, 1937.

Mr. and Mrs. BUCK celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with open house on March 30, 1941, in the home at 307 7th street southeast, where they had lived for 55 years at the time of Mr. BUCK'S death.

Surviving Mr. BUCK are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. R. J. [Pearl Bethia (BUCK) HUGHES SATTERLEE] HUGHES, Delaware aparaments (sic), and a son, Frank M., St. Paul, Minn. Two sons, George [George Chauncey] and Arvis (sic, should be Orvis Earl), died in infancy, and a daughter, Mildred Helen PEXLEY (sic, should be PIXLEY), died in May, 1930, at the age of 26. Mr. BUCK also has 5 sisters living and 1 brother. One sister, Mrs. Nora PRESTON of Buffalo, N.Y., has spent some time in Mason City. There are 6 grandsons and 3 granddaughters, and 1 great-granddaughter, Nancy Jeanne HUGHES, also a great-grandson Jimmy HUGHES. Two of the grandsons, Robert O. BUCK and Frank BUCK, Jr., Minneapolis, are in foreign service.

Mr. BUCK was one of the oldest members of the First Methodist church of Mason City. He was a member of the I.O.O.F, Rebekahs, Benevolence lodge No. 145 A.F. & A.M., the Order of the Eastern Star, the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and C.M.& St. Railway club.

Funeral Services for George Buck, 81, Held Here Friday

Lodges' Members Attended in Body; Kober Officiates

Funeral services for George Burton (sic) BUCK, 81, 307 7th street southeast, who died at his home Tuesday following an extended illness, were held at the Major Memorial Chapel Friday afternoon at 2:30, with Doctor Marvin B. KOBER of the Methodist church, officiating clergyman.

Mrs. Roger KIRK sang two solos, "In the Garden" and "Crossing the Bar" with Mrs. Roy SERVISON accompanying. Mrs. SERVISON also played 2 organ solos, "Liebestraum" and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." Flower arrangement was in charge of Mrs. C. W. CORBY and Mrs. Vern METTLER.

Pallbearers were George WENT, Vern METTLER, William HUFFMAN, Carl PARKER, Charles CRAVEN and Willard BARR.

Members of the Masonic fraternity, Eastern Star, Odd Fellows and Rebekahs attended the funeral in a body. Masonic committal services were held at the grave by members of the Masonic lodge with Remley GLASS officiating.

Burial was at Elmwood cemetery with the Major funeral home in charge.
