Monday, May 02, 2011Jasmine Barrientes - 'a beautiful young lady'
MASON CITY — Tammy SWANSON-DRAHEIM'S voice broke with sorrow when speaking of Jasmine BARRIENTES, "a beautiful young lady," she said. "She was kind and gentle; a great friend to everyone," said SWANSON-DRAHEIM, pastor of First Covenant Church in Mason City.
The 15-year-old died Sunday of injuries suffered in a car accident on Saturday in Worth County.
BARRIENTES, she said, was a member of the church youth group.
Sometimes, BARRIENTES, a freshman at Mason City High School, "would come early to help with a program for the younger kids," SWANSON-DRAHEIM said.
"She was just a wonderful young lady," SWANSON-DRAHEIM said.
Her friends in the group — some of them her closest friends, she said — "were broken" to hear of the loss of their friend.
Her comments were similar to those expressed by others.
Superintendent of Schools Anita MICICH and Mason City High School Principal T. J. JUMPER were at the MCHS prom Saturday evening when alerted to the tragedy.
MICICH went to offer support to friends and family at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
MICICH was immediately struck by the outpouring of love for the girl.
"Jasmine, as people have told me, was really a sweet young woman who had friends in a lot of different groups," MICICH said. "I heard from many that she was very kind."
Close friends held an informal candlelight vigil Monday evening at East Park. BARRIENTES was the daughter of Jessica KOHLER and J. R. BARIENTES.
School administration brought in crisis team members Monday to comfort students struggling with the news of BARRIENTES' death and the hospitalization of another classmate.
Kristina DAOUD, 15, of Mason City was last listed in fair condition at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.
Driver Brianna STAUDT, 17, of Mason City, and another passenger, Kimberly SMITH, 14, also of Mason City, were not injured, according to the Iowa State Patrol.
"These are the kinds of things so hard to understand," said Mason City Assistant Superintendent of Schools Hal MINEAR of the student's death.
Counselors, additional staff and members of the Area Education Agency 267 were all on hand.
Administration met with staff before classes on Monday. Administrators made sure students were monitored and not alone during the day, he said.
"These are tough, tough days," MINEAR said.
He said administrators will decide early today whether to bring in the team for a second day.
It marks the third tragedy this school year for Mason City students. Two other classmates died in October, one from an illness, another in a car accident.
Students at MCHS understood what it meant to have others monitoring their emotions, MICICH said.
MICICH said JUMPER perhaps best described the atmosphere at the school on Monday:
"He said the kids knew the routine, that they understood there was a process we needed to go through — that was the good news. The bad news was that we had to go through the process."
