Eugene Charles JOYNT was born one of nine children to Thomas and Mary (McNALLY) JOYNT in Emmetsburg, Iowa, on Oct. 9, 1916. He graduated from Emmetsburg High School and moved with his family in 1941 to a farm north of Clear Lake. In March 1942 he joined the Navy and honorably served his country during World War II aboard the destroyer USS Jeffers. He received his basic training in San Diego, served in the Atlantic during the landing on D-Day at Normandy Beach and in the Pacific fleet assisting with convoy duty.

Gene was united in marriage to Rita GIRRES at St. Joseph Cathedral in San Diego, Calif. To this union was born five children. Returning from the war in October 1945, Rita and Gene started farming south of Clear Lake and in 1950 moved south of Mason City where they raised their family and continued farming until 1988. At that time they retired and moved into Mason City.

While farming, Gene was employed at Allied Mills and the American Crystal Sugar plant. He worked as a substitute mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service and later drove cars for Lyons Toyota Dodge.

Gene served on the St. Joseph's Parish Council and also served as the deanery representative. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the VFW.

Gene and Rita were avid square dancers in earlier years. They also enjoyed playing cards with their family and friends. Gene went on many fishing trips and later in life took up golfing.

For many years they enjoyed wintering in Arizona and traveling to the annual Navy reunions. What Gene loved most was spending time with his family. He can be described best as a husband, father and farmer in that order. Gene had a simple way of making anyone his friend and was a very hard worker all of his life.

Surviving Gene and thankful in sharing his life are his wife, Rita, of 66 years; his three daughters: Gloria (Jim) WOOG-KAMISH, St. Paul, Minn., Nancy (Keith) BAUER, Clear Lake, Kathy (Rick) MOREL, Mason City; one son James (Susan) JOYNT, Clear Lake; one sister Alice LUDWIG, Algona; 13 grandchildren: James (Teri) WOOG, David (Carriann) WOOG, Joy (Rich) GARVEY, Daniel (Rianne) WOOG, Michael (Ranae) JOYNT, Marci JOYNT, Mindy (Scott) GIZIEWSKI, Paul BAUER, Jason (Catherine) BAUER, Lisa (Josh) LOCKWOOD, Kara, Rachel and Bridget MOREL; 19 great-grandchildren, Mikenzie, Caelen, Delaney, Jacob, Zachary, Hope, Emily, Nicholas, Josey, Tyler, Kenzie, Carly, Christopher, Chelsea, Louis, Mia, Ava, Jayson and Anthony; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
