Evelyn was born April 21, 1919, in Hancock County, Iowa, to Bill and Gertie PECK, the second of 12 children. Her parents farmed in several places in the Hancock and Winnebago county areas. Evelyn had early responsibilities; assisting with the children and duties on the farm.
Evelyn met her tall, dark, and handsome life-long companion when she was 16. She married Henry BROWER at Sioux Falls, S.D., on Aug. 5, 1936. Their attendants were John and Anna ISEBRAND, sister and brother-in-law of the groom. They lived in Crystal Lake and Britt before settling in Clear Lake in 1944.
Evelyn was a stay-at-home mom to one daughter and two sons. She dearly loved her "Hank" and children, keeping a hospitable home for friends and family. She was actively involved in the children's activities, accompanying them on trips and seeing to it they all had piano lessons. She never tired in helping her family no matter where they were and always got "Hank" to pitch in also. Her first commitment was to God and she loved that fellowship and encouraged her loved one to do likewise.
In 1980, Evelyn and Hank retired but not from their home and garden. Evelyn was just as busy and had to hurry to be able to go when Hank was ready. They visited their sons' homes in Ohio and California and wintered in southern Texas. Their grandchildren enjoyed and respected them, and "Grandpa and Grandma" spent good times with them. Together they had 61 years. In 1997, due to Alzheimer's and Hank's failing health, Evelyn became a resident of the care center. She has been lovingly cared for by the staff at USA Healthcare and Hospice, for which the family is grateful.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Gerry BROWER of Clear Lake; and two sons and their wives: Dennis and Julie of Brea, Calif., and David and Mary of Deerfield, Ohio.; four grandsons: Daniel (Sheryl) KALER, Mason City, Michael KALER, Nerstand, Minn., and Justin and Jared BROWER, Brea, Calif.; and one granddaughter, Jeneva (Curt) FRAUND, Murrieta, Calif.; three great-grandsons: Anthony FRAUND, Murrieta, Calif., Gabriel KALER, Mason City, and David (Monica) KALER, Edmond, Okla.; and one great-great-grandson, Mekhi KALER, Edmond, Okla.; siblings, Ethel (Jake) LEWERKE, Clarion; Don, Zearing; Duane, Ventura; Junior, Britt; Darlene (Darl) SCHMIDT, Garner; and Sharon GARRET, Goosecreek, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Gretchen PECK, Crystal Lake, Hylene NONNWEILER of Minnesota, Marlys HUTZELL, Pisgah, Iowa, and Betty DORENKAMP of Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Bill (Marie) BROWER, Ventura, and Dan SPILMAN, Clear Lake; many nieces; nephews; and friends; and one aunt, Helen SMITH of Belmond.
