Tuesday, July 12, 2005MASON CITY — Vernon D. NYHUS, 82, of 807 Eighth St. S.E., Mason City, died Saturday of heart complications (July 9, 2005) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City with Pastor George D. CALHOUN officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, with military rites will be accorded by the Mason City Memorial Association.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may be directed to the family.

Vernon DeVere NYHUS was born April 23, 1923, on the farm in rural Leland, to Henry L. and Clara B. (JORGENSEN) NYHUS.
Vernon attended and graduated from Leland High School, class of 1941. He was inducted into the Army Air Corps, on Feb. 3, 1943, serving as radio operator and gunner.
While stationed overseas in England he completed his tour of duty with 35 bombardment missions with the 8th Air Force, 390th Bomb Group and the 571st B Squadron.
Vernon honorably and faithfully served his country during World War II, being discharged on Sept. 16, 1945.
He moved to Mason City in 1953.
On Sept. 30, 1956, Vernon was united in marriage to Elaine NELSON in Mason City. Throughout his working life Vernon was employed as heavy equipment operator, with both Percy and Henkel Construction Companies, until retiring in 1978.
Vernon had been active in the Barber Shop Chorus with the Mason City Chapter and was also a member of the Community of Christ Church in Clear Lake.
Vernon's interests include being a great servant while helping others, an avid fisherman, walker and baseball. His favorite team was the St. Louis Cardinals and he also followed the Minnesota Twins.
He will be best remembered for being a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, treasuring time spent with his family. Vernon will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Vernon's life are his wife, Elaine (NELSON) NYHUS, of Mason City; his daughter, Lannette (Pastor George) CALHOUN of Milton, Wis.; his granddaughter, Sarah CALHOUN of Madison, Wis.; two grandsons, Benjamin (Alison) CALHOUN of Elgin, Ill. and Joshua CALHOUN of Elgin, Ill. Survivors also include many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Ferne HIRT, Mavis HERMANSEN, Hazel INGEBRETSON and Jane LOPEZ; and two brothers, Harry and Richard NYHUS.
