October, 2010Mason City - Meredith L. DILLON, 90, of 995 Briarcliff Circle, died Monday, (October 18, 2010) at Muse Norris Hospice in-patient unit Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Friday (October 22, 2010) at Grace Evangelical Free Church, 440 N. Illinois Ave., Mason City, with Rev. Scott A. Davis, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, where full military honors will be conducted by members of the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 P.M. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City, and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.
Meredith L. DILLON was born August 21, 1920 at Waverly, the son of Lyle and Alice (BLANCHAN) DILLON. He was united in marriage to Wanda Elwood on May 29, 1966 at First United Methodist Church, Mason City.
He attended school at Waverly and later, Mason City, where he played coronet in the band, under Carleton STEWART. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1939, and later, earned an associate in arts degree in business.
Meredith served in the U.S. Army during WW II, stationed in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. His unit joined forces under General Patton, where he witnessed the liberation of the Jewish people in Germany.
He re-entered civilian life working at various jobs, clothing stores, selling insurance, and was the assistant manager of a J.C. Penney Store. He was associated with Midwest Life Insurance for 25 years.
Meredith loved his family and golf. He got a hole in one, at Charles City, and played in a foursome at Highland Park for many years.
Meredith is survived by his wife, Wanda DILLON, Mason City; a daughter, Linda (Erving) HOWE, Jr., Louisville, Colo.; a son, Larry (Zelda) ELWOOD, Mason City; four grandchildren, Toma Dean ELWOOD, Honolulu, Hawaii, Gregory Dean (Michelle) BENNETT, Westminster, Colo., Troy Dean (Amy) ELWOOD, Mason City, Trevor Dean (Sarah) ELWOOD, Mason City; five great-grandchildren, William Dean ELWOOD, Madelyn Sue ELWOOD, Treyton Dean ELWOOD, Taegen Dean ELWOOOD, Reese Dean ELWOOD BENNETT; a sister, Maxine (Bob) LEKWA, Story City; and many nieces and nephews and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Marion RANSON.
