CLEAR LAKE — Phyllis Cleanora ANDERSON JENSEN, 89, 481 N. Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at Oakwood Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 12, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Wednesday at the church. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Family suggests memorials to Opportunity Village or Hospice of North Iowa.

Phyllis was born on March 21, 1921, in Garner, the daughter of John and Esther (OLSON) ANDERSON. She grew up helping with farm work and helping her mother cook for their family of nine.

She graduated from Ventura High School in 1938 and moved to Clear Lake where she met her future husband at the Surf Ballroom.

Phyllis married Gerald (Jerry) JENSEN on June 8, 1939, in Clear Lake and they were blessed with their only son, Gary Lee, in 1945.

Phyllis worked at the Surf Ballroom (eight years), Kuns' Kitchen, Lake Shore Hotel, and Swift & Company in Mason City. Phyllis started working for Jerry's Meat Market (1938) and then their grocery business which grew into JENSEN'S Supermarket (415 Main Avenue) where she worked as a grocery store manager for 40 years until she retired and they sold all stores in 1988. JENSEN'S was proud to be the first business in Clear Lake to hire a Handicap Village resident.

Phyllis was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran church in Miller, Iowa, and was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church most of her life (70-plus years). She helped with ushering and donating Christmas trees.

Phyllis was also an associate member of St. Peter Lutheran church in Fort Myers Beach, Fla., for over 20 years.

Phyllis and Jerry lived for over 30 years on South Shore Drive then moved to North Shore Drive in 1997. She was heavily involved in the Clear Lake community, including being a Charter member and later a two-term President of the VFW Auxiliary, a Worthy Matron of OES from 1961-1962, member of Lioness for over 50 years where she was a charter member and past President, and a long-time member of the Zion Ladies Circle.

Phyllis enjoyed her family, golfing, handwork, fishing and traveling, including spending many winters with her husband in Florida and Arizona.

She is preceded in death by her husband (2010), her parents, sister Maruene COYIER, sister Lois HANSON, brother Carroll and brother Robert (Bing).

Phyllis is survived by son Gary JENSEN, grandson Nathan and Emily JENSEN (Ankeny), granddaughter Shantel and Nicholas CRELLIN (Omaha), great-grandchildren Brock and Rex JENSEN and Isabella and LilyAna CRILLIN, brother Larry and Pat ANDERSON (Spencer), brother M. E. (Eddie) and Betty ANDERSON (Clear Lake), brother-in-law DuWayne and Dorothy JENSEN (Sun City, Ariz.), sister-in-law Adelheide "Laddie" and Al WALTERS (Sun City, Ariz.) and many nieces and nephews.
