RICHLAND, Wash. — John McKee (Jack) HEFFNER, Jr., 96, passed away Saturday (Jan. 28, 2006).

John was born Nov. 19, 1909, in Mason City, Iowa, to John McKee and Amonde ZAHM HEFFNER. He graduated from high school in Mason City and went on to Iowa State University, where he received his B.S. degree in engineering in 1932.

He spent several years in the home construction business in Iowa and Illinois, and in 1942 he was employed by the du Pont Co. in the engineering department at the Kankakee Ordinance Works in Kankakee, Ill. He was transferred by du Pont to the nuclear pilot plant at Oak Ridge, Tenn., for training prior to his transfer to the Hanford plant in 1944. While working at Hanford he held various engineering and construction management positions for du Pont, General Electric, ITT and Vitro Engineering.

Jack was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and was a professional engineer. He was also involved in a number of community activities including the Richland School Board and the Benton County School Board. He was past president of the Ben-Franklin United Way, past president of the Richland Kiwanis Club, and past president of the Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis. He was an active member of Central United Protestant Church since 1946, where he served in many capacities including board chairman in 1960 and 1961.

He was an avid fisherman and boater. He and his wife traveled extensively after his retirement.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Virginia; a granddaughter, Heather HEFFNER; and a great-grandson, Alex YONCE.

He is survived by his three sons and their wives, David and Barbara HEFFNER of Penn Valley, Calif., Philip and Bonnie HEFFNER of Richland, and John and Melanie HEFFNER of Beaverton, Ore. His grandchildren are Shawn HEFFNER of San Jose, Calif., Julie LEE of Gilroy, Calif., Stephanie ADAMS of Sedona, Ariz., Michelle YONCE of Kent, Wash., Virginia HARTER of West Richland, Steven HEFFNER of Richland, Christina HEFFNER of Richland, Michael HEFFNER of Stayton, Ore., Joelle BROWNING of Sherwood, Ore., and Jeremy HEFFNER of Arvada, Colo. He has six great-grandchildren and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.

There will be a graveside service at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Tri Cities Chaplaincy-Hospice.
