MASON CITY - Donald J. DIETER, 74, of Mason City, died Friday (Jan. 27, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Harry KOELKER and the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a 6 p.m. Scriptural prayer service.

Memorials may be directed to the Donald J. DIETER Memorial Fund.

Donald Joseph DIETER was born May 15, 1931, in rural Plainview, Neb., the son of Casper and Helen (LANGHORST) DIETER. Donald attended Vinton High School in Vinton. Donald served his country in the United States Air Force in Korea from November 1945 until the time of his honorable discharge in July 1958.

Donald was united in marriage to Colleen MACKEY in 1952 in Vinton. They later divorced in 1975.

Donald served as a lay missionary in New Guinea from 1958-1959. In 1960, they moved to Springville, Iowa, and later to Mason City in 1969.

In 1976, Donald was united in marriage to Marcella REICHERTS in Rapid City, S.D.

He was a longtime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City, a volunteer at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City and a lifetime member of the VFW.

Survivors include his children, Sharon DIETER, John DIETER, both of Vinton, David DIETER and wife, Cheryl, of Visalia, Calif., the Rev. Mark DIETER and wife, Catherine, of Lancaster, Wis., Joanne NORRIS and husband, Brian, of Quasqueton; step-children, Sandy OSEGERA and husband, Phil, of Mason City, Robert REICHERTS and wife, Debbie, of Burnsville, Minn., and Mary SCHIFF of Mason City; grandchildren, Ross HOSMANN, Kylee, Karson, Kullen and Kellis DIETER, Brennan NORRIS, Sarah Jo RIPPEL, John and Will NORRIS, Brenda CECIL, Holly and David OSEGERA, Heidi FEURING, Chad OSEGERA, Rob, Joseph, Jonathan and Christopher REICHERTS, April POHREN, Heather GRAVES and Ashley SCHIFF; several great-grandchildren; sister, Darlene POTTER and husband, Frank, of Zwingle.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Colleen, in 1997; and his second wife, Marcella, in 1998; and one sister, Delores SCHULTZ, in 1999.
