MASON CITY — Karen (SJOSTRAND) SQUIER, 57, of 1027 Thompson St., Sheffield, passed away Sunday, May 1, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Upon her wishes, she will be cremated.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield; memorial services will follow at Zion St. John Lutheran Church in Sheffield.

Memorials may be directed to the Karen (SJOSTRAND) SQUIER Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Karen Kay SQUIER was born June 12, 1953, at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, the daughter of Robert and Betty (FRONING) SJOSTRAND. She was raised on the family farm, east of Sheffield and attended Sheffield-Chapin Consolidated school, where she graduated in 1971. She then graduated from LaJames Beauty School in Mason City. Karen worked in several beauty salons in Mason City, before returning to live in Sheffield. She ran a home daycare out of her home for many years, while raising her daughter, Melissa. Later she worked at Armour's in Mason City and the Sheffield Care Center.

On Aug. 11, 1999, she married Douglas SQUIER and they made their home in Sheffield.

She is survived by her husband, Doug SQUIER of Sheffield; daughter, Melissa Anne SJOSTRAND of Minneapolis, Minn.; step-son, Joshua SQUIER of Minneapolis, Minn.; step-daughter, Nettie SQUIER of Sheldon; mother, Betty SQUIER of Mason City; two grandsons, Tyson and Nicholas DAVIS; brother, David SJOSTRAND and wife Myra of Mason City; sister, Phyllis NOLTE and husband Bill of Sheffield; mother-in-law, Betty SQUIER of Mason City; special friends, Christine NADEAU and Jay RAINVILLE of Minneapolis, Minn.; aunt, Dorothy SJOSTRAND of Rockwell, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert SJOSTRAND; brother, Wayne SJOSTRAND; father-in-law, Wendell SQUIER; brother-in-law, Jay SQUIER and grandparents, Clarence and Velma FRONING and Edward and Signe SJOSTRAND.
