December, 1994DOUGHERTY -- Beatrice D. WADE, 91, of 909 West Foster Ave., Chicago, Ill., formerly of Dougherty, died Sunday (Dec. 4, 1994) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Ill.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic CHurch, Dougherty.
Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic School, Dougherty, with a Scriptural service at 7 p.m.
Other arrangements are incomplete at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic School, Dougherty, with at Scriptural service beginning at 7 p.m.
Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.
Beatrice D. WADE was born Jan. 13, 1903, in Dougherty, daughter of John F. and Mary (DOUGHERTY) WADE. Her father, John, was an Iowa state senator from the 39th district and an early proponent of mental health and prison reform. Her mother was the daughter of Hon. Daniel DOUGHERTY, a noted pioneer settler of Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.
Beatrice Dorothy WADE founded, and for 30 years headed the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Illinois, Chicago. A native Iowan, she was graduated from the University of Iowa and organized the occupational therapy service for the Psychiatric Institute of the University of Iowa. Her career as an instructor began at the Illinois Department of Mental Health. After developing a program in occupational therapy at Eastern Michigan University, she returned to Chicago and headed the undergraduate degree program with in the University of Illinois at Chicago and Urbana until 1972. This program was one of the earliest occupational therapy programs combining didactic education and clinical practice to be located in a medical center.
She was very dedicated to the rehabilitation of the mentally ill, and originated the movement in the last 1930's to include the mentally ill within the scope of federal and state legislation under the Vocational Rehabilitation Administration. She was also a charter member of Recovery, Inc., an association for former psychiatric patients. Her countless contributions to the state of Illinois and the city of Chicago were recognized in 1970 by Richard J. DALEY, when she was named to the Hall of Fame of the city of Chicago.
On July 29, 1992, the Beatrice D. WADE Library for the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Illinois, Chicago, was dedicated.
In 1993, the WADE and MEYER Chair in the Department of Occupational Therapy was created.
A memorial service will be held at the University of Illinois, Chicago, after Jan. 1.

Survivors include one brother, Hugh J. WADE, Juneau, Alaska; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clement, Martin and Edwin WADE; three sisters, Nell, Catherine and Grance WADE, and many cousins.
