Merle M. Tatum

MASON CITY- Merle M. Tatum, 89, of 324 Second St. N.E. died Thursday (May 9, 2002) at Good Shepherd Health Care Center.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m on Saturday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Richard "Rick" Eichenlaub officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today and before services Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Merle Tatum Memorial Fund.

Merle was born on Aug. 3, 1912, in Marshalltown, the son of James and Anna (Behrens) Tatum. The family moved to Mason City in 1915, where Merle attended school.

He married Hazel M. Lemon in Mason City. Merle worked for Deckers Meat packing Plant, then owned and operated a grocery business with his wife, worked for International Chemical Co., and then for the city of Mason City.

He was a member of First Christian Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge.

Merle is survived by two daughers and one son, Joanne Pedelty and her husband, Milton of Haw River, N.C., Dixie Yuhouse and her husband, Bob of St. Paul, Minn., and Gerald Tatum and his wife Sally, of Mason City; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hazel; two brothers, Don and Jim, and two sisters, Vivian and Carol
