On The Home Front

Cement sacks filled with sawdust are piled high in front of the Northwest Savings bank building, simulating a bomb shelter where the local citizenry is flocking to buy bonds so we don't ever need anything more genuine in the line of shelters. It is the opening gun in the 3rd war loan drive and it was appropriately initiated by Vete CLAVARCELLI, an Italian, who pounded on its doors early Thursday morning before it was even opened to buy bonds in honor of the capitulation of Italy. "I've got 2 sisters in Italy," said CLAVARCELLI.

Don WHITE will give a 'black' magic show Saturday, tickets for which will buy cigarettes for servicemen overseas. And speaking of cigarettes and servicemen, the Junior Chamber of Commerce has amassed $1,046 in their current drive to buy smokes for the boys on the other side. . . .

The war chest campaign dates have been set at Oct. 21 to 29. About 17 agencies need $125,000,000, and the Cerro Gordo share of this sum is $48,100.

A post-war planning committe has been formed here to provide for men and women who will come back to Mason city. A. B. WEBSTER is the chairman.
