James "Jim" Kuhlman, Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame, 2005

James (Jim) Kuhlman came to Cerro Gordo County, April 1, 1981 as the County Extension Director. He retired in 1997 from Cerro Gordo County having served 35 years for the Extension service.

Jim began his USDA Extension career on September 10, 1962 at Kearney, Buffalo County, Nebraska. Over his career Jim had the privilege to work with over 10,000 4-H members in two states and three counties.

After his retirement, Jim continued to support the 4-H program. He and his wife Ann started the 4-H Service Above Self Award, a special recognition and cash award to an outstanding High School Senior girl and boy who assisted the 4-H program above the call of duty. He continued to announce the Junior Beef and Dairy Shows at the North Iowa Fair and judged 4-H projects at various county fairs in Iowa.

Over the years he assisted the Cerro Gordo County 4-H Teen Council members to plant numerous trees in the Jim W. Kuhlman Grove on the North Iowa Fairgrounds in Mason City.

Jim joined 4-H in Randall County, Texas in 1947 and exhibited livestock at the first Randall County Junior Livestock Show in 1948.

He is married to Ann, they have two daughters, Lisa a former Cerro Gordo County 4-H member, and Jennifer, and two grandchildren Cody and Cassidy Jenison.
