EVANS FAMILY MOVED FROM CLARION

Severt Evanson Came to U.S. From Noway in '90

Here are Severt EVANS and 4 of his sons talking it over. From left to right, the sons are Harry, Russell, Melvin and Lester. Theya re operationg 880 acres of Cerro Gordo county land as a joint venture and ahve purchased another farm on which Harry CRAWFORD is tenant.

Severt EVANSON came to Illinois from Norway in 1890. When he got to this country he changed his name to EVANS because a brother who proceded him had been advised to do so and followed the advise. In 1898 he married and brought his bride [Sarah Marie Atlanta (MICHELSON)] to Wright county, farming for 31 years 7 miles north of Clarion. There they reared a family of 5 son and 3 daughters.

Eleven years ago the boys decided that they wanted less costly land than that in Wright county and decided to move. They looked first at a farm west of Forest City but decided that it was too rough and poor. The farm agent who showed it to them said the only other farm he had of the size they wanted was near Burchinal.

They had never heard of Burchinal, Harry and Melvin admitted, but followed directions until they got to the farm on which Harry now lives. They bought it and he moved there in 1935. A brother, Arden, came with him but left in 1940 to work for the Standard Oil company in Mason City. Later he went into the army and since his discharge has worked for the Green Colonial Furnace company in Des Moines.

The father, Severt, and Lester moved from Clarion to the farm adjoining Harry in 1940. Melvin had moved in 1939 to a 240 acre farm 3 1/2 miles south and 1 1/2 miles west of Mason City, just 5 miles from Harry's place.
