Principal Chuck BREDLOW is known to this generation of high school students as a guy in a jacket and tie, working reverishly in the front office to keep things on track.
But, at this year's girls' state basketball tournament, BREDLOW was recognized for accomplishments in his "former life," the life of a high school coach for not one, but two, major sports. On March 9, BREDLOW was honored by the Iowa Girl's Athletic Union for his accomplishments as the winning coach in the girls' state basketball tournament of 1987. At that time he was teaching and coaching at Ventura High School in north central Iowa. BREDLOW says the school was very small; he only had 36 girls to work with, but the squad went 41-0 that year and produced one of the top female basketball players in the nation, Lynne LORENZEN.
LORENZEN broke the national record for scoring, averaging 63 points per game (girls were still playing 6-on-6 at the time). She also won the Nate SMITH award which goes to the top player in the nation.
"The best memory was beating Southeast Polk in the state championships," BREDLOW said with a laugh. "It was a dream come true, a small school beating a big school."
The win over the Rams wasn't a close game, either; the final score of that game was 90-69. His squad also beat Ankeny and Urbandale that season.
BREDLOW has taught and coached at various schools. He started at Mquoketa in 1980 after graduating from Central College. He moved to Ventura in 1982, went to Grundy Center in 1987 and ended up here in 1991. He has served as both a head football coach and a head girls' basketball coach.
BREDLOW is the only coach in state history who has won two state championships in the same calendar year in two different sports (football and girls' basketball) at two different schools.
BREDLOW says his college football coach, Ron SCHIPPER at Central College, was his role model and his inspiration to enter the world of coaching. He says SCHIPPER taught him to look at kids by the size of their hearts not the size of their bodies, a lesson BREDLOW says he still holds true.
"(Chuck) has impacted the lives of many," P.E. teacher Terry WELLS says. "He would push them harder than they had ever been pushed before; they hated him sometimes, but they love him now."
