Merrilee,
Thank you so much! Did you happen to notice that
the "John" on the Civil War database was listed as age 29 in 1864, yet the biography listed him as born in 1846 which would have made him about 18 in 1864. The biography does say his father was a wagon master just as the civil war database shows William and a wagoner.

The biography does not mention my "John" as having been in the Civil War. So... was the civil war "John" a different John?-did William have two sons named John?- was the civil war John, not the son of the wagon master, William and was perhaps a cousin or uncle of my "John"? This is really a puzzle.

this gives me much more to go on!
