Jonathan Casebeer settled in Sugar Creek Township in 1839 near the Sharon School, and still owned property there in 1872. He operated the Fort Sumter underground railroad station from his home transporting fugitive slaves north according to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library website. He was also in the Greybeard Regiment during the Civil War,and is buried in Sharon Cemetery.
My great grandfather Samuel Casebeer emigrated to Oregon soon after marrying Jemima Brown in 1851.
His sister Mary Ann Casebeer married a William Boydston, son of John Boydston, who owned property near the Sharon Cemetery. Another of his sisters, Nancy Casebeer married William Willford (family now spells the name with one l).
A brother John Casebeer married Lucenda Humphrey the daughter of the Rev. Aaron Case Humphrey, another operator of the Underground railroad who lived just south of Tipton. Do any of those of you who subscribe to this query list have any information about any of these 19th century Cedar County residents? Bob Casebeer, Oregon.
