Interesting to see this thread taking off now; lots more can be said about this fascinating story. I'm not the first to say "1858 raid" here probably refers to the October 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now WV), because that's where the Coppoc(k) brothers took part. But there was an important John Brown raid from Kansas into Missouri in December 1858, and Springdale plays a part in that saga, too. From late December 2008 into March 2009, I devoted several episodes of my weekly radio show to recounting John Brown's last trip across Iowa, laying out the tale to coincide with 150th anniversaries as they unfolded. In October I took part in a conference and other observances at Harpers Ferry and discussed John Brown's Iowa connections further. I'm adding a link to my radio archive which includes program descriptions. Enjoy!
