Mr. Pierce:
In response to your inquiry, I am from the Springdale area and if I remember correctly, the men only spent a winter or two in the area training for their raid on Harper's Ferry, from 1857-1858. They trained on the Maxson farm east of Springdale.

The area was well-known on the Underground Railroad and many of the farms that were stops are still standing. Many Quakers settled here (and still reside) and were known for pacifism and their opposition to Slavery.
