Funeral services for Ray Pierce, 73, native of Tipton and former employee of The Tipton Conservative, were held at Dodge City, Kans. Nov. 14 with burial in the Maple Grove cemetery, Dodge City. He died in Dodge City Nov. 11.
Pierce was born at Tipton Dec. 13, 1913. He graduated from high school and attended junior college in Tipton for 2 years. He received his BA degree in English and speech from Coe college.
While he has in high school and junior college he worked part-time for The Conservative.
He taught English and speech at Highmore, S.D. and Moravia. He was employed by John Applegate, printer, at Washington and by weekly newspapers at Sioux Rapids and Manilla. He was in the US Army during World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946.
He married Helen Applegate at Washington in 1945.
After his discharge from the army, Pierce became editor of the Southwest Daily Times, Liberal, Kans. In 1947 he became editor of the Dodge City Times, later the High Plaines Journal. He retired as editor in 1947.
Pierce was a member of the Agricultural Hall of Fame board of governors, Bonner Springs, Kans.; of the Newspaper Farm Editors of America and the American Agricultural Editors' association.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Kent, Chicago Heights, Ill.; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
