Funeral services for James O. Phelps, 81, were held at the Sheets and Son funeral home, Dec. 23 with the Rev. Michael Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers wee Richard, Ruel and Larry Wehde, Douglas, James, Kerry and Randy Phelps, and Robert Thee. Mrs. Donald Hipple was vocalist and Mrs. Max Phelps was organist. Mr. and Mrs. James Coder, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Coder, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Wicks and Mr. and Mrs. Tom Coder were in charge of flowers.

Mr. Phelps died at University hospitals, Iowa City, Dec. 20 following a brief illness.

The son of George and Berthenia Fairchild Phelps, he was born near Springdale, April 19, 1894 and was educated in the Springdale schools. He was married to Esther M. Sharpless at Tipton, Nov. 24, 1915.

He farmed in Cedar and Linn county before moving to Tipton 14 years ago. He was a seed corn salesman.

He is survived by his wife and 2 daughters, Mrs. Harold (Naomi) Wehde, Tipton and Mrs. Orville (Carrie Etta) Stoeber, Long Lane, Mo.; 3 sons, Max and Gene, both of Tipton and Dale, Cedar Rapids and a foster daughter, Mrs. John (Bernice) Coder, Conesville. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
