Funeral services for John S. Bender, 72, former Tipton grocer, were held at Sheets and Son funeral home Nov. 12 with the Rev. George Snell officiating. Burial was in St. Mary cemetery.

Pallbearers were Virtus Reiling, Walt and Tom Sheets, Leamon Scott, Max Crawford and Kenneth Montz.

Mr. Bender died at University hospitals, Iowa City, Nov. 9 following a long illness.

The son of Jerome and Jennie Smith Bender, he was born at Scotch Grove May 25, 1902 and received his education in the Wyoming schools. He was married to Margaret Plank in Tipton, June 1, 1933.

A resident of Tipton since 1928, he operated a grocery and later was a meat cutter for the Tipton Locker service.

He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, Mrs. Roderick (Jerri) Daebelliehn, Tipton and Mrs. Perry (Jean) Swofford, Gladstone, Mo.; a son, Charles, Tipton; 6 grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Grace Vrooman, Olin.

He was preceded in death by 2 sisters and a brother.
