Last rites for J. Melvin Thomas, 62, were held at St. Bernadette's Catholic church in West Branch. Burial was in Memory Gardens, Iowa City.

Mr. Thomas died at Mercy hospital, Iowa City, Aug. 31, following a long illness.

The son of Harley A. and Fern Todd Thomas was born at Wilcox, Saskatchewan, Canada, July 18, 1912. He was married to Maymee Piatt in Iowa City.

Mr. Thomas operated a service station in West Branch before his retirement a year ago.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Donna Woodson, Rochelle, N.Y.; a granddaughter, 2 brothers, Minard and C. Don Thomas, both of West Branch and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1967.
