July 12, 1973 - The Tipton Conservative

Memorial services were held Monday, July 9, at 3 p.m. in Tipton, at the First United Church of Christ for Homer Deane (Rusty) Gill, 45. The Rev. William Johnson, Chicago, Ill., and Dr. Glenn Parrott, both United Methodist church pastors, officiated.

Mr. Gill died of 2 strokes July 5 at Des Plaines, Ill. His body was cremated there, as he had desired. He was born Aug. 6, 1927 in Abilene, Texas to Lester N. and Myrtle Paine Gill. He attended school in Arnolds Park, Kinglsey and Ames high school where he graduated. He attended Iowa State University, majoring in architecture and pursuing his interest in Bible study. He served as a supply pastor for several small churches in the Ames area while there.

He served in the paratroopers during World War II. As a result of a nearly fatal accident he suffered while jump master in the paratroopers, he was transferred to the personnel section of the Signal Corps and was stricken with polio and remained in Walter Reed hospital in Washington D.C. until his medical discharge some months later.

He returned to the University of Iowa, majoring in commercial art and advertising and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi social fraternity at SUI as he had been at Iowa State.

Mr. Gill worked for the Council Bluffs (Iowa) Non Pariel and was a chamber of commerce executive at Hampton and Carroll before he headed an insurance agency at Emmetsburg. He later entered the management consultant field at St. Paul, Minn., and operated his own consulting firm in Chicago.

At the time of his death he was assisting in the development of vocational-technical schools for Vietnam War veterans in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. These schools evolved from his work with the "Chance Rehabilitation Program." The family reports that memorial contributions may be made to the Chance Program.

He married Inez Barton April 18, 1952 and she preceded him in death May, 1965. They were the parents of 3 children, Cynthia Lynne, Sheryl Lee and Michael Barton.

He married JoAnn Sales Potter Oct. 14, 1972.

He is survived by his 3 children, his wife and a step-son, Chris Potter, his parents and a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Elizabeth) Moore.
