The body of William F. Vedepo, 47, West Branch, who was injured in a 4-car accident the night of Dec. 23, was found Sunday afternoon in a farm field near the site of the accident in which he was apparently fatally injured at about 6:10 p.m. Saturday. Vedepo was the driver of one of the vehicles involved in an accident about a mile east of Iowa City.

Vedepo died of multiple injuries suffered in the accident, officers said.

The Iowa Highway Patrol said a truck believed driven by Vedepo was apparently involved in the unusual accident that damaged 3 other vehicles Saturday on U.S. 6 east of Iowa City.

Vedepo's truck was found parked on the shoulder of the road, but Vedepo could not be found, apparently because he wandered into the field where his body was discovered Sunday, troopers said.

Several troopers searched unsuccessfully Saturday in the area where the truck was found, the IHP said.

However, the IHP said the search was called off after several hours and was not resumed until Sunday morning. The body was found by a farmer, the IHP said. They reconstructed this account of the traffic accident:

Vedepo was westbound in a pickup truck apparently driving in the wrong lane of traffic when he was involved in a head-on collision with a car driven by Thomas Conway, 32, Iowa City.

The Conway auto was then in a collision with an eastbound car driven by Marlene M. Masbrach, 24, Iowa City.

The Vedepo truck, which had left the roadway after the initial collision, then drove back onto U.S. 6 and continued west in the wrong lane of traffic and apparently without functioning headlights.

At that point a car driven by Clarence W. Miller, 61, Morning Sun, approached the Vedepo truck from the east, swerved to miss it and struck the Conway car.

Vedepo then drove his truck off to the side of the roadway, stopped it and wandered into the field.

None of the other persons involved were injured, troopers said.
