September 24, 1970 - The Tipton Conservative

Final rites for Mrs. Erna Stafford, 74, were held Sept. 22 at the Sheets and Son Funeral home with the Rev. Eugene Miller officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery. Terri Thompson was vocalist and Mrs. Irma Crawford organist.

Pallbearers were Gene Harden, Floyd Tipton, Donald Ogden, Carl Crispin, Wesley Marquett and Paul Reuter. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Frederick, Mr. and Mrs. Reldo Schnack and Mrs. Carl Crispin were in charge of flowers.

Mrs. Stafford died at Cedar Manor Sept. 19 following an extended illness.

The daughter of Gottfried and Lena Herring Meyer, she was born at Lone Tree Aug. 20, 1896 and was educated in the rural schools of Johnson county. She was married to James Stafford at Lone Tree Feb. 4, 1914.

The Staffords lived in the Lone Tree-West Liberty area until 1938 when they moved to Tipton. She had lived at Cedar Manor for 2 1/2 years.

Mrs. Stafford was a member of the Methodist church, the Tipton chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Tipton Moose lodge.

She is survived by a son, Robert, and a daughter, Mrs. Wilbur (Esther) Barkhurst, both of Tipton; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and a brother, August Meyer, Lone Tree. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and 4 brothers.

The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Cedar Manor.
