Wilbur Leland Colby, son of William C. and Jennie Cameron Colby, was born June 28, 1908 in Cedar county, Iowa, and passed away at the Anamosa community hospital July 20, 1979 at the age of 71.

He graduated from the Mechanicsville consolidated school in 1925.

He married Sylvia Switzer on Nov. 27, 1903 in Mt. Vernon and to this union were born two sons.

He farmed northwest of Mechanicsville until 1947 when he moved to Mechanicsville and operated the Eastern Iowa Livestock sale barn until 1962.

He owned and operated three farms north of Mechanicsville his entire life and also maintained an office in the sale barn until the mid 1960s.

He was an auctioneer for 48 years in the Mechanicsville area and moved to Anamosa in 1975.

He was a member of the United Methodist church in Anamosa, the Moose Lodge, Modern Woodmen and the Anamosa Rotary club.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Sylvia, are two sons, Derell of Mechanicsville and Allen Le Roy of San Clemente, Calif.; two sisters, Violet Hoy of Mechanicsville and Marjorie Conway of Lisbon; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a half sister.

Funeral services were held in the United Methodist church, Mechanicsville, on Monday, July 23, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dick Harberts officiating. Interment was in the Rosehill cemetery in Mechanicsville.

Pallbearers were Vernon Boots, Kenneth Hoge, Paul Jensen, Stanley Smith, Douglas Willey and Ralph Willey.
