Final rites for John Howard Carey, 54, were held at the Sheets and Son funeral home Nov. 13, with the Rev. Eugene Miller officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were Joe Conway, W. H. Dugger, Roger Morden, Ralph Nodurft, Claire Foote and Dale Stiff. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Miller were in charge of flowers. Mrs. Arnold Swan was organist.

Mr. Carey died at St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, Nov. 11 following a short illness.

The son of John and Minnie Winekauf Carey, he was born in Tipton June 4, 1915 and was graduated from Tipton high school in 1934. He was married to Hilda Friedrichsen at Kahoka, Mo. July 11, 1939.

He had been a mechanic in Tipton for more than 26 years, first with the Miller Motor Company, then with the city of Tipton and, for approximately 2 months with Fred Zousel Chevrolet and Oldsmobile.

Mr. Carey was the senior active member of the Tipton fire department and was a member of the United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Hilda; a son, Steve, a student at Iowa State University; a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Suzanne) Steege, Annandale, Va., whose husband, Major Robert Steege, is stationed at the Pentagon and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
