MECHANICSVILLE - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Platner Akers, 100-year-old native Iowan, who was born and raised near Mechanicsville, died Friday at Des Moines. She attended high school at Tipton, and was graduated from Cornell college, Mount Vernon, in 1869.

Mrs. Akers was the widow of John W. Akers, state superintendent of public instruction from 1882 to 1888. She had lived in Mount Vernon, Vinton, Waterloo and Cedar Rapids.
