Sylvia Joyce Gould, 77, of Tipton, passed peacefully surrounded by family, on Friday, August 21, 2020 at Leland R. Smith Assisted Living in Wilton, from complications of Alzheimer's. There will be a 10:00 am visitation and 11:00 am funeral service on Monday, August 24th at the First United Methodist Church in Tipton, followed by a graveside service at the Red Oak Cemetery, Tipton. Services will be officiated by Pastor Jay Amundson and Pastor Jerry Swinton. Face masks will be provided and observing social distancing between groups that arrive together is preferred.
Family has established the Sylvia Gould Memorial fund and asks that all cards and memorials be mailed c/o Kenneth Gould to 304 Walnut St. Tipton, Iowa 52772.

Sylvia, daughter of Donald Ernest Krans and Majelle Norene (Grimm) Krans was born on Tuesday, January 19, 1943 in Galesburg, Illinois. Sylvia spent her childhood on the family farm in Galva, Illinois. She graduated in 1961 from Galva High School. Attended Western Illinois University as a music major, where she met her future husband, Ken Gould, in band and choir at WIU.
On January 27, 1963, Sylvia and Ken eloped, and were married in Carthage, Illinois. They were blessed with three children. In 1967, Sylvia and Ken moved to Tipton, Iowa, where Sylvia served as church secretary, organist and pianist for the First United Methodist Church for over 40 years. She taught numerous students piano in her home and accompanied many soloists and ensembles for the music department at Tipton Community Schools. After raising the children, Sylvia finished her Bachelor of Music from The University of Iowa in 1982. She then taught general music at Tipton Middle School and also assisted the high school and middle school band directors. Sylvia was a member of the Tipton First United Methodist Church, the Iowa Music Educators Association, the United Methodist Women Abigail Circle, the 19th Century Club and PEO.
Sylvia was born into a musical family and shared her love of music with her husband, family and friends daily. "Music and love go together." In her free time, Sylvia enjoyed the outdoors and all that nature provided. Gardening, camping, canoeing, hiking, observing birds and fauna, along with baking, cooking, and sewing gave her joy. Family and friends describe Sylvia as a high energy person who always met others with a smile and positive attitude. She always brought joy to others.
Sylvia is survived by her devoted husband, Kenneth Gould, Tipton, IA; son, R. Michael Gould of Swisher, IA; daughters, Kimberly (Chuck) Dietz of Iowa City, IA, and Angela (Don) O’Tool of Clear Lake, IA; sister, Carolyn (Carl) Wiggins of Rushville, IL; and five Grandchildren, Taylor (Sean Crews) Gould, Austin Gould, Colton Dietz, Erin O’Tool and Connor O’Tool.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Majelle; and one brother, Donald Krans Jr.
