11 November 1892 - The Clarence Sun

Samuel W. Simmons was born in Carroll Co., Ohio, April 18th, 1825, and died in Clarence, Ia., Nov. 7th, 1892. He resided in Ohio until 1853 when he removed to Cedar Co., Ia., where he continued to reside until death.

He enlisted as a soldier in the United States army, at Tipton, Ia., August 8th, 1862, under Capt. Johnson, Co. C. 24th Regiment, Iowa Infantry, for three years or during the war. He was a brave and faithful soldier, and during his service was promoted to the office of Corporal. He was honorably discharged from the United States service July 17th, 1865, at Savannah, Georgia. While in the army his health was very much broken, and he was never afterward able to recover it.

On April 29th, 1869, he was married to Miss Mary L. Harmer, who now mourns his loss. The widow and the entire circle of relatives have the sincere sympathy of the whole community in this, their sad bereavement.

Mr. Simmons was an affectionate husband and kind neighbor. He was a very genial and pleasant man socially. He has been a great sufferer during the latter years of his life, especially during his last illness his suffering was very intense.

"But now the silver cord is loosed, the golden bowl is broken, the pitcher is broken at the fountain, and the wheel broken at the cistern. The dust shall return to the earth as it was and the spirit has returned unto God who gave it." The funeral was held at the M.E. church Nov. 9th, conducted by Rev. W. B. Davis, assisted by Rev. N. H. Downing. The burial service was in charge of the William Beaver Post of Tipton. There were representatives present from Wm. Hoyman Post of Clarence, also the Comstock post of Mechanicsville, and the J. L. Wild Post of Stanwood.
