December 18, 1891 - The Clarence Sun

Mrs. Gates, the aged mother of our townsman, M. D. Gates, is very low at the home of her son and her death is expected at any time. Later--she died about three o'clock this morning.

December 25, 1891 - The Clarence Sun

The funeral of Mrs. H. W. Gates, whose death we noticed last week, occurred at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at the M.E. church, Rev. Davis officiating assisted by Rev. Downing, followed by interment at the Massillon cemetery.

Deceased was born in Athens, Somerset Co., Maine, July 10th, 1809 and died in Clarence, Ia., Dec. 18th, 1891. She was married to F. A. Gates at Marietta, Georgia, in 1839, where she was engaged in teaching. With her husband she returned to Maine in 1843 where she resided until 1853, when, with her family she came to Cedar county, Iowa, where she continued to reside until death. She was the mother of six children, Mary, John, Martin, Frank, Emma and Charlie, two of these have preceded her to the world beyond. She has been a widow for eleven years, her husband having died in 1880. She has been a member of the Baptist church for many years, having joined it in early life.
