24 June 1892 - The Clarence Sun

In order to correct an error in the following notice we reprint it in The Sun this week, with the necessary corrections.

On Wednesday forenoon the sad news was brought to this city that Mr. Edward Samuels had been found in an unconscious state and that it was feared that he was dead. Dr. Greig was summoned, and found that life had indeed fled and that the cause was heart failure. Mr. Edmund Elijah and Mr. Samuels were plowing in adjoining fields. After a time the former noticed that the latter's team was standing still and went over to see what was the matter. Mr. Samuels lay as he had fallen partly upon his head and shoulders with the lines still around his shoulders. The deceased was born in Delaware county, N.Y. July 7, 1838. He enlisted in the army May 1st, 1861, as a member of Co. I, 71st New York Vol Inf., and was honorably discharged therefrom July 30, 1864. He was the first man to offer his services to the country in Delaware county, New York. He never fully recovered from wounds received near the close of his term of service. He was married Feb. 27, 1867, and removed to this place in March, 1870. He was a charter member of William Hoyman Post, No. 13. The funeral which took place on Thursday afternoon with services in the Presbyterian church, was attended by many of the old veterans and other mourning friends. The deceased leaves his wife and one son to mourn their great loss, and to them the deep sympathy of the community is extended in their sudden and very great affliction.
