24 October 1890 - The Clarence Sun

DECKER--Hiram Decker died at his home in Clarence, Oct. 21st, 1890, aged 72 years, 3 months and 15 days.

Deceased was born in Livermore, Maine, July 6th, 1818. Was married to Miss Susan Cookson at Freedom, Maine, Aug. 30th, 1845. The wife and two children preceded him to that bourne from whence no traveler ere returns, Mrs. Decker being buried from the Presbyterian church Dec. 1, 1882. They removed from Milo, Mo., to Nora, Ill., Oct. 17, 1864, and the following year to Cedar county, Iowa.

His two remaining children, H. A. and Frank have been with him during the last weeks of his illness, who, with their wives, have remained at his bedside night and day.

His dying request was that his old neighbors and friends should be bidden an affectionate farewell, saying, "They will see me no more; I have gone to the other world; my work is done. I look to the Lord of heaven and earth for the future and trust that I will be found faithful at the last." To his children he said "Stay by me and see that I am laid to rest beside your mother, who I soon shall see, and then I want you to take good care of our graves as long as you live."

He selected as the text for a funeral discourse Micha, 2:10, "Arise ye and depart, for this is not your rest." He selected the hymns to be sung, also the pall bearers.
