18 August 1893 - The Clarence Sun

James Cramer was born in Hampshire Co., Va., Nov. 25, 1821. Died at the home of his-in-law, Mr. W. W. Rolson, near Clarence, Ia., Aug. 12, 1893. Aged 71 years, 8 months and 17 days.

Deceased moved from Virginia to Shelly Co., Ohio, in the twenty-second year of his age. Was married to Miss Clara Wood, Feb. 11, 1847. To them were born 3 sons and 2 daughters of which 2 sons died in early childhood. The wife, one son and two daughters are left to mourn his departure. The deceased was ever regarded with great respect by all with whom he was acquainted. In early life he embraced religion and united with the M.E. church, to which he belonged at the time of his departure to the church Triumphant.

Mr. Cramer had been in very poor health for 18 months before coming to Clarence, and the next night after his arrival was taken worse and lived but about 7 days.

In the absence of Rev. W. B. Davis, Rev. W. N. Chaffee was called to officiate. The text will be found in Phil. 2:1: "If there be any consolation in Christ." The sermon was very able and listened to with great interest. He not only pointed us to the joys and consolation in this life, but to the joys in that life where there will be no end.

The service at the coffin was very impressive, and so plainly answered to the text "There is consolation in Christ." The widow after repeating several scripture quotations such as, "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away," "Blessed be the name of the Lord,' and after bidding him good bye, said she would soon meet him in that glorious home on high. Blessed parting.

The corps was then followed to the cemetery by a large number of people and laid to rest.

The M.E. choir will long be remembered for their willing and able service at this time.
