Edward William Goldsmith of Monmouth, was born on a farm east of Clarence to Henry and Freda Boettcher Goldsmith on March 19, 1905. He passed away June 19, 1977 at the Veteran's hospital at Iowa City.

He entered the United States Army on December 7, 1942, and served until he received his medical discharge on August 28, 1945. He served part of the time on Red Cross Hospital trains, transporting wounded and ill veterans from coast to coast to designated hospitals at various points in the United States.

In March 1946, he was united in marriage to Mildred Gilmore of Monmouth. To this union, one daughter, Sueann, was born.

Survivors beside his wife and daughter include three grandchildren, James Edward Goldsmith, Dennis Lee and Pamela Sue Varty; a sister, Mrs. Forrest (Esther) Woode of Clarence and a number of nieces and nephews in the Clarence and Cedar County area.

Funeral services were held in Clarence at the Chapman Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, 1977. Services were conducted by Rev. Paul Jordan of Lowden.

Pallbearers were Carl Pence and Walt Allen of Monmouth, Ray Doerman, Arthur Dirks, Glen Pruess and Fred Backman of Clarence.

Interment was in the St. John's Cemetery at Clarence with military graveside services conducted by Victory Post 286 of the Clarence Legion Post.

Those attending from outside of the Monmouth and Clarence communities were Mr. and Mrs. George Gilmore, Maquoketa; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Drake, Andrew; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Kubert and Wayne Jr. of Clinton; Carlyn Kubert of Davenport; Mrs. Warren Wanek of West Branch; Robert Woode and daughter Wendy of Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Mathiss and Mrs. Sandra Willert of Tipton.

Lunch was served by the Legion Auxiliary at the Legion Hall in Clarence.
