August 31, 1961 - The Tipton Conservative

A 9-year-old girl was fatally injured when she fell off a tractor and was run over by one of the wheels in a mishap at the Orren Kaiser farm north of Wilton Junction Aug. 23.

Susan Herrig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Herrig, was riding on a tractor being driven by Steve Hansen, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Hansen.

Mr. Herrig is employed by the Hallett Construction Co. which is working on Interstate Highway 80 and the family lives north of Wilton Junction.

According to Wilton Junction city marshal Art Giese, the Herrig girl apparently fell from the tractor as young Hansen was driving through the gateway at the farm and went into a ditch. The tractor did not upset.

Miss Herrig was taken by Adolph Hansen and Bob Sherwood to a Wilton Junction doctor for treatment. She later was taken by Gill ambulance to University hospital at Iowa City where she died at 1:50 a.m. Aug. 24 in the recovery room following surgery.
