8 June 1961 - The Tipton Conservative

E. L. (Roy) Crew, 72, long-time resident of West Branch and owner and operator of the Crew Insurance and Real Estate Agency, died in Iowa City May 30 following an illness of one week.

He was born Aug. 19, 1888, in California, the son of J. Clarence and Clara Ball Crew.

Nov. 27, 1917, he was married in West Branch to Bertha Thomas. They had no children of their own but made a home at various times for two nephews, Minard and Melvin Thomas and a niece, Betty Crew.

He was a member of the Conservative Friends Meeting.

He had farmed near West Branch until 1927, when he moved to town, and opened a garage and became an automobile salesman. He later opened an insurance and real estate agency.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha, 2 brothers, Rollo, West Branch, and Howard, Iowa City; and one sister, Mrs. Ruthanna Gruwell, West Branch. Also several nieces and nephews.

One brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held June 1 from the Conservative Friends Meeting House. Interment was in the Hickory Grove cemetery.

Pallbearers, all nephews, were Clarence Crew, Francis Crew, Richard Slach Jr., Donald Thomas and Dale Thomas.
