21 March 1890 - Clarence Sun

DIED--At his home near Clarence, March 13th, 1890, Mr. Nathaniel Dewell, aged 60 years and 2 months.

The above chronicles the death of one of the early settlers of this locality. Mr. Dewell was born in Wayne county, Ohio. At an early age he removed with his parents to Kosciuske county, Ind. Here he was first married and resided near the town of Warsaw until 1855, at which time, with his family, consisting of wife and three children, he came to Tipton, Cedar county, Iowa. In 1858 he moved from Tipton upon his old homestead about four miles north of Clarence. Here he lived until 1879, at which time he came to his late home near the town. His early life, both in Indiana and in this county, was one of hardship and unceasing toil, as will be vividly remembered by some of his early associates, but by his untiring industry and, perhaps, more than usual frugality, he succeeded in overcoming want and poverty and the last few years of his life he has possessed a very valuable farm estate. His early education was retarded by his circumstances, but what little literary training he then received served as a nucleus around which collected a general knowledge of practical matters and wide range of thought as those who had occasion to converse with him in later years only knew. His worth as a citizen was recognized in many ways and his integrity never questioned by men with whom he dealt. His health has been much affected during the past fifteen years but an exceptionally strong constitution enabled him to stay the ravages of disease until about September last, since which time he sank rapidly. About January 1st he became confined to his bed and never rallied sufficient to be out again. Though he suffered greatly he retained his consciousness until the very moment of his death. He leaves a widow and nine children, six sons and three daughters. The funeral occurred Saturday, March 15th, at 1:30 o'clock from his late residence. The services were conducted by Rev. Manning, assisted by Rev. Downing, the interment being in the family lot at the Diamond church cemetery. The entire family and several grand children were present. His age was told by the simple inscription on the plate of the coffin: "N. Dewell, Born January 13th, 1830: died March 13th, 1890."

"I have lived my life, and that which I have done
May he, within himself, make pure."
