20 December 1889 - Clarence Sun

Miss Orpha Burton, a pupil of the Lowden public school, aged about 10, died very suddenly of heart disease about 8:30 P.M. Friday last, at the school building, while giving a recitation in rhetorical exercise in the presence of the school and a number of visitors. She seemed to be enjoying excellent health up to the moment of her death and had recited a portion of her selection when suddenly she stopped, and, as many thought, made a bow as if to leave the floor, when she fell lifeless against the seats. Medical aid was immediately called and all in the power of those present was done to restore her to consciousness but to no avail. Deceased was of a bright and cheerful disposition and showed marked ability to learn. The funeral was held Sunday, at 11:00 A.M. at the M.E. church, and was largely attended. Rev. Brettnell preached an able and appropriate sermon from the text, "Teach us so to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." The parents have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
