25 October 1889 - Clarence Sun

After keeping the lone and anxious watch for many weary hours over the loved husband and father, hoping that the ravages of that dread disease diphtheria might be checked and he who had been the companion of a good share of a lifetime be restored to health, death, the silent conqueror of all, visited that home and Mr. John Imrie is known no more. He had only been seriously ill for a short time, but had been more or less indisposed throughout the summer. When taken down it was little thought that the result would be fatal, but his spirit passed to Him who gave it at nine o'clock last Saturday night. No funeral services were held, the body being buried on Sunday at two o'clock. All possible precautions were taken to prevent a spread of the disease and so far no member of the family or anyone else have been attacked, as far as we can learn. Mr. Imrie was an exemplary citizen, loved and respected for his manly worth by all who knew him and the blow is a sad one to the family, to the U.P. church, of which he was an active member, and the community in general. He was about 56 years of age. Appropriate funeral services will be held at an early date.
