Fred W. Owen, 75, prominent Tipton farmer and cattle feeder, died at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids. Death was due to a shotgun wound received about 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Peterseim & Dye funeral home.

The shotgun wound was self-inflicted, according to Dr. W. J. Kopsa, Cedar county coroner.

Owen was alone in the barnyard of his farm six miles southeast of Tipton when he was injured. The charge from the .410 shotgun struck him in the upper left side of the abdomen.

He was taken to St. Luke's hospital where he was immediately taken to surgery.

Owen is survived by two brothers, Ralph of Tipton, and Frank of West Liberty, and a sister, Mrs. Ada Chapman, Tipton.

Mr. and Mrs. Owen had recently purchased a lot from Carl Mitzner on east Sixth street in Tipton and had begun construction of a new home.
