Mrs. J. W. Smith, 72, a resident of Bennett for 44 years, died at McAllen hospital, McAllen, Texas, Jan. 24.

Nellie Mae Westfall, daughter of the Rev. John S. and Mary Bender Westfall, was born in Jones county, near Wyoming, Nov. 7, 1884. She married Jay W. Smith in Tipton Feb. 28, 1913. They had made their home in Bennett since that time.

She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. Florence McKay, Dixon; Mrs. Elinore Jenkins, South Gate, Calif., and Mrs. Jean Swails, Davenport; two sons, J. Warren, Des Moines, and Harold W., Bennett; 10 grandchildren and four sisters, Mrs. Fred Sherwood, Tipton; Mrs. Inez Holmes, Camanche; Mrs. Grace Winner, and Mrs. Ralph DeVries, and a brother, Harry M. Westfall, all of South Gate, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Gaddie and Florence Westfall.

She joined the Methodist church as a child and was a faithful worker in the church and Sunday school as long as her health permitted. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the Amvets Auxiliary of which she was a past president.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Sheets & Dahn funeral home in Tipton with burial in Inland cemetery. The Rev. Lamont C. Smith of the Methodist church, Bennett, was in charge of the service.

Pallbearers are Sylvan Kleppe, Charles Hovey, Phil Hambright, Wilbur Eggert, Millard Brown, and Carl Martens. It was requested no flowers be sent but that memorial be made to the Amvets for hospital work.
