9 December 1959 - The Tipton Conservative

Mrs. Charles L. (Hazel Ione) Wagner, 24, Linn township farm-wife, was instantly killed about 9 a.m. Wednesday in a truck accident a mile and a half south of Mechanicsville.

Mrs. Wagner was on her way from her home to Mechanicsville when she apparently lost control of the pick-up truck she was driving on the slippery blacktop. With her in the truck was her 3-year old daughter, Janet Elaine.

John H. Hanna, Des Moines, deputy state fire marshal, saw the accident, as he drove south from Mechanicsville. He said that he first thought that Mrs. Wagner was going to turn into the driveway of the Walter Nanke farm home. Then the truck straightened out and went down the highway for approximately 100 yards where it swerved to the right and into the ditch on the east side of the road.

Hanna said that the truck overturned once. It came to rest against a fence, facing to the south. Mrs. Wagner was thrown from the car and was found by Hanna about 10 feet from the truck.

The little girl was in the cab of the truck, under a cushion where she had been thrown.

Dr. Walter Kopsa, Cedar county coroner, said that Mrs. Wagner died instantly of a broken neck; she suffered chest injuries also. The little girl was taken to the Nanke home where it was found that she had received only face cuts and a chipped tooth.

Mrs. Wagner, the former Hazel Hearn, is survived by her husband and 2 daughters, Janet, who was riding with her, and Arlene, 2-months old. She is also survived by her mother, 4 sisters and a brother, Jim.
