A native of Tipton, Raymond C. Schroeder, 38, son of Mrs. Dorothea Schroeder of Iowa City, was beaten to death in a hotel room in Mobile, Ala., Saturday night.

Police said he was bludgeoned on the back of the head with a heavy water pitcher. He was found dead Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Schroeder had lived for the past 10 years in Chicago, where he was head of the real estate tax department of the Great Lakes Mortgage Co. He was on vacation.

He was a native of Tipton but lived in Iowa City for many years before entering the navy during World War II. He was a 1939 graduate of University high school and attended the University of Iowa for two years before entering service.

Mr. Schroeder was born May 1, 1921, the son of Christian and Dorothea Hick Schroeder. The family lived at Mechanicsville for a short time before coming to Iowa City.

He was a navy hospital corpsman during World War II, and after the war, was graduated from the Gregg Business college at Chicago. He had been with the mortgage firm since.

Survivors include his mother; two brothers, F. Herman Schroeder, Iowa City, and Rudolph S. Schroeder, Hood River, Ore.; three sisters, Mrs. Gus Ohrt, Monticello, Mrs. William Siemsen, Ogallala, Nebr., and Mrs. Russell Miller, Rochester. His father and a sister preceded him in death.
