George Allen Phelps, 77, of Cedar Valley, was killed instantly about 9 a.m. Monday in a tractor accident on the farm of his brother, Howard, north of Springdale.

Mr. Phelps had apparently climbed down from the tractor he was operating to close a gate he had just passed through. As he was closing the gate the tractor backed up and crushed him against the gate.

The son of William and Anna Varney Phelps, he was born at Springdale June 2, 1882. He was married to Mary Smith at West Branch Dec. 27, 1905. He was a lifelong resident of the West Branch area and a farmer all of his life.

He is survived by his wife; 3 brothers, Howard, Herbert, St. Paul, Minn., Louis, Grinnell, and a sister, Mrs. Hannah Colbert, Seattle, Wash.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at West Branch.
