Mechanicsville, Ia. May 10--David Rhoads was born Sept. 23d, 1833, in Montgomery county, Pa. When a young man in Philadelphia he learned the trade of brick laying, becoming an expert brick layer. He came west with the great multitude of seekers for gold, going as far as Pike's Peak, and returning in 1856, it came to his knowledge that a brick building was being erected at Mt. Vernon, Iowa, which was the original building of Cornell college. He obtained employment here at his trade. While at Mt. Vernon, he observed the wonderful fertility of the soil of the western prairies, and concluding to invest in Iowa lands and pursue farming purchased the tract of land adjoining the present homestead, now occupied by his son, Charles. Subsequently, he purchased the present homestead, living thereon ever since, and by his diligent labor and exceptional judgment in farming and stock raising has developed it into one of the most finely improved farms in Cedar county.

David Rhoads was a man of exceptional mental and physical strength. He came from the Friends, or Quaker stock, and though never affiliating with any church organization, he possessed strong convictions and was absolutely fair and honest in his dealings. No neighbor, in dealing with him, ever found him derelict in any of his obligations.

In 1862 he married Anna Mary Heneks. From this union four sons were born, Wilber C., now at Anita, Iowa, Charles E., well known in this neighborhood, John C., now living in Minneapolis, and Frank H., deceased. Mary Rhoads died in the year 1870, when Frank H. was an infant.

In 1872 he married Catherine Armetrout, from which marriage six sons and one daughter were born: Samuel, now living in Mason's Grove; David and Joseph, living in Cedar Rapids, Harry, living in Mechanicsville, Eugene, living on the homestead; Anna the wife of Cecil Overbaugh, and Herman, deceased.

David Rhoads died on May 6th, 1916, leaving surviving him his wife, Catherine Rhoads, together with the children heretofore mentioned, being the last of a family of eleven children.

The funeral was held on Tuesday forenoon at the home of his son, Eugene, at which time a large company of friends and relatives were present.

The services were in charge of Rev. W. N. Baker, who spoke to the text, "If a man die, shall he live again", the music being furnished by a mixed quartet. The body was laid to rest at Union cemetery, the procession escorting it there being composed entirely of automobiles, twenty-two in number.
